My X10 arrived yesterday, so these are early observations. Like the other Emeralds I own, this new model is a visual delight; sized between my previous generation X7 and the X20. Super comfortable, and the new neck design gives access to the upper frets like no other acoustic I’ve played. With the factory (D’Addario) strings on it, it sounds brighter acoustically than the X7 or X20. Nice balance. I played this plugged in, through an acoustic amp, a PA, and an electric amp – an amazing range of tones! I’m still working on the learning curve with the pickup controls, but the pickups on this seem hotter than the pickups on my other acoustics (that is not a bad thing). I played electric for a lot of years before making the move to acoustics – this new X10 will be comfortable in both worlds. When I first saw the release video on this model, I wasn’t sure how I felt about a humbucking pickup on the top of an acoustic guitar… no doubt some acoustic purists will be appalled by this, but this guitar really kicks when plugged in! There are other great Emerald options for a pure acoustic sound. A bit more about the neck: love it! The thinner profile and 1 11/16″ nut width give this neck the feel of an electric. I ordered mine with a 24.6″ scale, making for the 13th fret at the body; I am very happy with that custom touch. First impressions: very positive!

Just over a week now with my new X10… this is an incredible guitar! Having a couple other Emeralds, I knew it would be comfortable and sound great. I was intrigued by the Level 2 pickup system. When the guitar arrived, I was impressed with the look, feel, and sound (as expected). Unplugged, it has a great acoustic balance. Plugged in with a typical guitar cable, you get a great variety of tone with the individual saddle piezo, the humbucking pickup, and the ability to blend each. Plug this in with a TRS to a Y cable, then run each side of the Y to an appropriate amp (one acoustic amp and one electric amp), and this guitar is amazing!
I was concerned about the 1 11/16″ nut width – it is super comfortable! The new neck design is my favorite! The profile is thinner than my X7 (previous generation) or X20. Fits my hand like it was made for it.
Those who know me are aware that I am a fan of the Emerald designs… but, is there a downside? Only one I can come up with is: I had to dust off my electric amp. 😉 This is a very impressive guitar. The more I play it, the more I find to like about it.
